چکیده

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to examine whether the time required for recovery from transient hypoparathyroidism is correlated with the onset of hypocalcemic symptoms in patients with total thyroidectomy. METHODS Medical records of 54 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The correlation between the onset of hypocalcemic symptoms and the recovery time were compared for all patients divided into 3 groups based on first appearance of hypocalcemic symptoms; group 1, onset within 24 hours; group 2, onset at 24 to 48 hours; and group 3, onset >48 hours. RESULTS There was a negative correlation between onset and recovery times (p < .001). Serum parathyroid hormone levels 1 year after surgery were significantly lower in group 1 than in groups 2 or 3 (p < .001). CONCLUSION Recovery time can be predicted by time of onset of hypocalcemic symptoms and signs. Earlier onset leads to longer recovery times.

Effectiveness of an i-PTH Measurement in Predicting Post Thyroidectomy Hypocalcemia: Prospective Controlled Study

PURPOSE Hypocalcemia is the most common complication after total thyroidectomy. The purpose of this study was to determine whether measurement of intact parathyroid hormone (i-PTH) level in thyroidectomy patients could predict hypocalcemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed a prospective study of patients undergoing total thyroidectomy. Serum concentration of i-PTH, total calcium (Ca), ioniz...

Comparison of calcitriol versus cholecalciferol therapy in addition to oral calcium after total thyroidectomy with central neck lymph node dissection: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of oral calcium plus vitamin D supplementation and to compare the effects of cholecalciferol versus calcitriol treatments on postoperative hypocalcemia. METHODS After total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection, 306 patients were divided into 4 groups according to "routine use versus on-demand use" and "cholecalcifer...

[Hypocalcemia as a reversible cause of heart failure].

Calcium plays a key role in heart muscle contraction and relaxation. Hypocalcemic heart failure is a rare and potentially reversible disturbance, which reflects this intrinsic relationship. The authors present the case of a 35-year-old woman who developed acute heart failure during the early postoperative period following total thyroidectomy. The echocardiogram showed severe global left ventric...

بررسی رابطه سطح سرمی ویتامین D و کلسیم پیش از جراحی با بروز هیپوکلسمی پس از جراحی در بیماران کاندید تیروییدکتومی کامل

Background: Hypocalcemia is one of the most prevalent complications following total thyroidectomy. Over recent years, in addition to hormone parathyroid hormone (PTH), vitamin D has been also studied as a factor causing post-total thyroidectomy hypocalcemia. This survey seeks to study the relationship between the serum level of vitamin D before surgery and during post-total thyroidectomy hypoca...
